Different Forms of Birth Control

Females have a plethora of options when it comes to birth control, not just “the pill”. The pill has several pesky side effects like spotting, weight gain, and headaches. There are other less-known options available. Here are a few!

  1. The patch is also known as Ortho Evra. The patch, like a band-aid, is applied to the skin of the arms, legs, back, or buttocks once a week for three weeks of the month. In the fourth week, the user doesn’t apply a patch to allow menstruation to occur. The patch releases chemicals like progesterone into the skin. The patch prevents acne, headaches, cramps, and (get this) pregnancy! The patch is 99% effective when used properly.
  2. Birth control injections are effective for up to three months at a time. The shot contains hormones that cause the cervical mucus to thicken. The birth control injection also keeps the eggs in the ovaries. Birth control injections are 99% effective. To obtain birth control injections, you’ll need a prescription from a healthcare provider following a medical exam. The shots must then be injected by a doctor.
  3. An IUD or intrauterine device is a plastic “T” shaped piece that releases small amounts of progesterone to prevent pregnancy. Once removed, the ability to become pregnant immediately returns. An IUD is 99% effective and can last up to ten years!
  4. Diaphragms are small, dome-shaped piece of silicone that is inserted to cover the cervix. This dome covers the entry to the cervix, which prevents sperm from ever reaching the egg. The effectiveness of a diaphragm is increased when paired with spermicide. This inexpensive, one-time purchase is comfortable for both partners.
  5. The birth control implant is a small stick that is implanted by a doctor in the upper arm. The implant will stay effective in preventing pregnancy for up to 3 years. The implant requires no medication and can be safe for women who cannot use estrogen. The Implant is 99% effective and can be removed at any time if you decide you would like to get pregnant.
